The “Mechanite” range of extruded double base propellants is well established within the UK defence industry. The basic purpose of this range of propellants is the controlled evolution of hot gas at pressures needed to operate mechanical devices or deliver missile payloads.
By skilful formulation of compositions a broad range of calorific values and burning rates is achievable, extending from relatively cool burning propellant used to inflate naval buoyancy systems to fast burning high energy propllant needed to launch and deliver missiles.
These propellants are fabricated into charges in the form of cylindrical extruded grains in a variety of cross sections and configurations, up to 100mm diameter and with chemical compositions appropriate to the performance requirement of the weapon system.
